OCDE,
Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, is a cooperation
entity between the biggest countries of the world. On 2000, it organized
a test for 265 thousand students of different series, all 15 years old.
32 countries had participated of this test, mainly the most developed
countries on Europe, America and Asia. The objective was seeing as each
country students would understand when reading and solving simple mathematics
and sciences problems.
Test
had three parts: questions that simply involved to read and to understand
a text; questions that involved numbers, amounts, or either, mathematical
reasoning; and others questions on basic chemistry, biology etc.
On
2001 this test brought students results. On the top there were Finland,
in the head, closely followed by Japan and Korea. U.S.A. had been in
15š place and Germany in 22š place. On last place, who was? Brazil.
We
are soccer country, but it was a tremendous kick on our leg! But, when
we have one hurt, a problem, we donīt have to hide it. It is necessary
to see the problem clear and to be able to ask for help. Maybe it will
bring a positive effect, sending an alert on our government about our
children education.
Finishing,
an interesting detail: in the average, the girls had been more successful
than the boys on these tests, in all the searched countries!
