With legends, myth, with the people Luis Camara Cascudo was born on Great River of the North city, on Brazil´s Northeast. He studied Medicine, but formed himself in Law Studies. He gave lessons and also was state deputy and a journalist. But, mainly, he researched popular legends, myths, foods, drinks, superstitions, folguedos, dances, tricks, rituals, parties, at last, everything what folklore can be considered. Today many of his books are obligatory reading in Brazil and exterior for the ones that research folklore. One of its more important workmanships is his Brazilian Folklore Anthology. His passion for folklore was born when he still was a boy was, hearing "causos", tales heard here and there from cattle tenders and rural people, on his land, besides the histories of his father, mother, tenants and neighbors. This become his bigger intellectual interest and finished guiding its life. He made research of field on the traditions, habits, and superstitions in the agricultural and urban areas. His office, installed in his house, was full of the most varied objects: books, sculptures, paintings, photographs, amulets, saints images, fossiles, currencies and gifts sent by friends and admirers of the entire world. A plate on the door informed those that approached: "Cascudo professor does not receive in the morning". He did not save efforts: he frequented places of fetichism of macumba, dislocated himself until beaches and shipman ports and travelled in the hinterlands. Talking, hearing the simple people, learning and registering, he carried through a work of incalculable value for the Brazilian culture. |
