Cartola Angenor de Oliveira was born on Rio de Janeiro in 1908. One day, working as mason, he decided to use a hat coconut so that the cement did not stick on his hair. Its colleagues had not resisted and had given him the nickname of Cartola...

Cartola was just few years on school. He always worked in small works, as mason, walls painter, carriages washer and building guard. But his gift made him the greater Carioca samba musician of all times. Despite his success, Cartola died poor, in 1980.
