Paulinho
da Viola (Paulinho of the Guitar)
Called
for many great names of brazilian music as "the Prince", Paulo
Cesar Batista de Farias, Paulinho da Viola, was born in Rio de Janeiro,
on November 12,1942. His father, Cesar Faria, was one of great musicians
of "chorinho" or "cry-style" in the past. "Chorinho"
is an instrumental form of Carioca music (music from Rio de Janeiro)
that reached its best on the 19th century, melding other european musical
styles like polkas, mazurkas, and waltzes with Afro-Brazilian percussive
rhythms.
Paulinho was released very young, near 1975, with the support of Cartola
and its woman, Zica. These two opened in Rio de Janeiro a restaurant,
the "Zicartola", that becomes a traditional samba point and
that promoted much great samba artists, as Alcione, Beth Carvalho, Martinho
of Vila and Candeia.
Inside Brazilian music, Paulinho work is unique. Although with raízes
in traditional "chorinho" and samba, his music is at the same
time innovative, speaking on brazilian people day-by-day, love and relationships.
He was one of the first Brazilian musicians to speak on ecology. Beyond
that, he is recognized and known by his character and elegance. Know
a little on the work from Paulinho da Viola with a song that become
very popular and shows well his style: "Capital Sin". The
novel told the story of a very honest and poor taxi driver, humilliated
by his girlfriend, that prefers a rich man. He decides to take the money,
but it belongs to a thiefs group, that begins to pursue him.
