The prison

João Candido was arrested to the prison on the Christmas of 1910. He and 17 mariners were put into a jail under the soil, locked with a heavy wood door, with just a little entrance for the air. The jail was painted with calcarium. It is poisoning when mixed with water. The prisoners become intoxicated. 16 died were dead in the morning after. Navy´s doctor said that they died from insolation. Talking to a journalist, Edmar Morel, almost 60 years after, João Candido explained that had almost become crazy: "I was hearing after all that the screams of my companions, sometimes seeing them fighting on the wet soil against poisoning calcarium. These scenes never left my eyes."
